MineralsAndPlants

Researchhasshownthatcertainmineralsarerequiredbyplantsfornormalgrowthanddevelopment.Thesoilisthesourceoftheseminerals,whichareabsorbedbytheplantwiththewaterfromthesoil.Evennitrogen,whichisagasinitselementalstate,isnormallyabsorbedfromthesoilasnitrateions.Somesoilsarenotoriouslydeficientinmicronutrientsandarethereforeunabletosupportmostplantlife.So-calledserpentinesoils,forexample,aredeficientincalcium,andonlyplantsabletotoleratelowlevelsofthismineralcansurvive.Inmodernagriculture,mineraldepletionofsoilsisamajorconcern,sinceharvestingcropsinterruptstherecyclingofnutrientsbacktothesoil.
